Between 19 and 22 July, the NAILSMA Steering Group and then the
project Technical Reference Group of the NHT-funded Dugong and
Marine Turtle Project met in Cairns to confirm a key component of
the project – the five Regional Action Plans. The plans
differ between regions, but all aim to build better
community-driven management of marine turtles and dugongs by
Traditional Owners across north Australia.
The regions involved are the Torres Strait, Cape York Peninsula,
the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, the Top End of the Northern
Territory and the Kimberley. The next stage of the project is to
tighten the RAP's and seek endorsement from the NT Joint Steering
Committee for approval of funds to undertake on-ground works over
two years
