Two large tracts of land in the Top End of the Northern
Territory will be recognised as national reserves. The new
Indigenous protected areas in Western Arnhem Land, to the east of
Kakadu, will be formally declared at a ceremony next month.
Executive Officer for Wardekken Land Management, Peter Cooke,
says it's a significant step for the future conservation of
Aboriginal owned and managed land.
"It will add very large areas of high conservation country to
the reserve system and it will attract a certain amount of
increased funding to provide the sort of management to deal with
the large need for management of fire, weeds and feral
animals."
