February Board Meeting and possible new CRC bid

The Tropical Savannas CRC Board met on February 29, the day after the Futures Forum. The key items discussed are summarised below.

  • While the Centre will officially wind up on June 30, 2008, the CEO and some administration and communication staff will remain employed until later in the year so that all the reporting and outputs such as the Annual Report can be completed.
  • A group comprising Bob Wasson (CDU), David Garnett (TS–CRC), Brian Keating (CSIRO), Greg Robbins (QDPIF) and Rolf Gerritsen (CDU) will investigate the feasibility of a bid for a new CRC focused on the broad area of sustainable northern development in the next round of CRCs with the final submission due sometime in 2009.
  • It is planned that the various CRC websites will continue to be developed and maintained beyond 2008 by a Tropical Savannas Communication business unit within CDU. This unit can also continue to distribute the remaining publications and secure funding to continue Savanna Links.
  • The North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA) continues to receive strong support from a variety of funding agencies and will be viable after the wind-up of the CRC.
